Of all the traditional Chinese festivals, the New Year is perhaps the most colorful and important. This is a time to finish out the old, and to welcome in the new. Common expressions are: guonian (to have made it through the old year), and bainian (to congratulate the New Year).
The Chinese New Year is celebrated on the first day of the first month of the lunar calendar. It can be as early as January 21st or as late as February 19th on the solar calendar. Like the western Thanksgiving, the New Year's Eve dinner is a time for all members of the family to gather together. There are dishes to symbolize health, wealth and good fortune. One favorite dish is jiaozi, or dumplings because their shape is like the ancient Chinese gold and silver ingot. People hide a coin in one dumpling while cooking. The person who ends up with the coin is the luckiest one.
You may stay up late or even go without sleep on New Year's Eve. This is called shousui—keeps the age. People watch special New Year's Eve programs on TV, play cards, chat and enjoy being around with their families. Children get red envelopes with good luck money in them.
As soon as the clock strikes twelve, firecrackers can be heard everywhere. People used to believe firecrackers and red clothing could frighten away the monster. Now these have become the signs for a prosperous and happy New Year!
