Discovery, the longest-serving orbiter of the NASA Space Shuttle program, officially went out of work this month. Since its first flight in 1984, it had completed 39 successful missioms . Its new home is in the National Air and Space Museum in Washington.
A space shuttle is a vehicle that takes astronauts into space and returns them to the Earth. The US has used space shuttles for carrying astronauts into space since 1981.
Space shuttles are made up of many different parts. The three main pieces are the rocket boosters., the external tank and the orbiter.The orbiter is a large space plane. It is the only part of the shuttle that goes into orbit.It carries the astronauts and whatever they bring with them. The tank connects to the botttom cf the orbiter. It holds fuel to be used by the rocket boosters for launching. The two rocket boosters are long and thin. They send out most of the thrust for the first two minutes of a shuttle launch.
Traditonal rocket powered launchers can be used only once. They are designed only for moving up very fast and have no epuipment for re-entry and recovery. The space shuttle is different.The“orbiter”comes back to Earth and is reused. However, it costs a lot of time and money to maintain the orbiter and to prepare it for use again.
