Many American's already consider Wal-Mart their bank since the retailer enables them to cash payroll checks, send money and pay bills. At the 225 Money Centers, there are even more services available, thanks to agreements with third parties that offer reloadable debit cards.Wal-Mart expects to double the number of Money-Centers by year end,and by the end of 2008 it plans to have 1,000 in operation, with more likely on the horizon.
"I know right now we could use more than 1,000 [Money Centers]," said Jane Thompson, president of Wal-Mart Financial Services.
Finding locations for the centers shouldn't be hard since many of the services are already offered at the customer service counter. For example, last year more than 2 million wire transfers were executed in its stores,Thompson said.Wal-Mart can simply look at its historical transaction data and locate Money Centers in areas of peak demand.Wal-Mart also has an incentive to exceed its disclosed expansion target since Money Centers currently offer one of the highest per-square-footage rates of profitability in the store, according to Thompson.
In addition,a glimpse of the growth potential that awaits the company can be found by looking at the success of its current wire transfer partner MoneyGram and that company's chief competitor Western Union.MoneyGram offers money orders and urgent bill payment services too,but wire transfers account for the bulk of its business and Wal-Mart is the company's largest customer.Last year, the retailer accounted for 24% of the $822 million in revenue generated by Money-Gram's global funds transfer business that has achieved quarterly growth rates in excess of 25% for more than five years.
A similar situation exists at Western Union, the leading wire transfer company with 300,000 agent locations worldwide, compared to MoneyGram's 110,000 locations.Western Union facilitated 147 million consumer-to-consumer transactions last year involving the exchange of $53 billion that generated fee revenues of $3.7 billion.Western Union's fees have declined in recent years due to competition, but the business remains very profitable with net income of $914 million realized on total revenues of $4.5 billion.
Wal-Mart is in the business to make money too,but it can tolerate a lower fee structure and typically charges less than $10 for a wire transfer. As a result,Thompson estimates the company saves customers who use the service $450 per year or nearly $40 a month.
"The $40 our customers save each month can grow to become the down payment on a house or help pay for a child's college education," Thompson said."That's our goal—to help our customers prepare and save for the future by giving them access to greater financial opportunities."
Therein lies another important motivation behind Wal-Mart's financial services initiatives.
