2.如果去掉 when 和 in 的话,

1. 假如要说问题的话,我觉得这应该是一个非限制性定语从句
The first time when Amy impressed me was in the selection of the *** , in which he ranked 10th out of more than 15000 candidates.
一般定语从句都是紧跟在先行词后,所以改成非限制定语从句比较合适,这个引导词which是指selection
我个人觉得这个翻译很明白了.
2. 去掉when是可以的,在先行词是time的时候,when是可以省略的,不会引起歧义.
但是,去掉in不行,这个从句相当于：he ranked 10th out of more than 15000 candidates in the selection(用which指代),in which在从句中充当状语,所以不能省略in
