(A)
In 1579,Francis Drake,a famous British explorer, discovered a channel which connected the Pacific with San Francisco, this was later called Golden Gate. And in 1937,one of the most famous bridges, the Golden Gate Bridge, was built over it.It was designed by Joseph Strauss and was opened in 1937.To our surprise,it only took 52 months to design and build the great bridge. It was ranked as the world's longest suspension bridge(悬索桥) until 1959.
The bridge is also called Bridge of Death.,because many people jumped into the sea from it.In 1995,the __suicide__ toll(人数) from the bridge had reached almost 1200.Nobody knows why till today. In 1987,people gathered to celebrate its fiftieth birthday. Some quarter of a million people turned up (a third of the city's entire(总的)population); the winds were strong and the huge numbers caused the bridge to buckle(使变弯曲),but luckily not to break.
