what's up 是 What's Coming Up 的缩略.
楼主注意到的情况是对的,即它没有what's going on 和 what happened这两句中那么强的询问对方发生了什么事的口气.它现在只是见面时的问候语了,极少有真正问对方发生了什么事的意思,不象what's going on 和 what happened这两个句子了.
