New Paradigm in Perimeter Security
Technology for all security applications has evolved rapidly.This article,the second of a series,explores new locating technology that is revolutionizing outdoor security sensors.
The function of precise target location can be found in perimetersensor technologies,including buried coaxial,acoustic and fiberoptic cable as well as millimeter wave-based ground radar.Indeed,the feature has enhanced performance of individual sensor types and extended range of applications to which they are suited.This feature,combined with a modern command-control system based on geographical information system (GIS) coordinates and integrated with global positioning systems (GPS) for tracking,yields a formidable system for providing needed security information in the most efficient way.
In the past,the concept of perimeter security was typically based on zones of detection.The wisdom imparted by agencies guiding the industry was that in high-security applications,these zones should generally not be more than 100 meters in length.This was primarily based on use of fixed-camera,closedcircuit television (CCTV) for perimeteralarm assessment.The security designer matched fixed-sensor zones to fixed-camera views,resulting in an effective assessment system.The resulting combined sensorassessment zones based on camera views were reasonable for providing needed information to guard forces to respond to alarms.
CCTV-camera views and sensor zones were specified in integrated perimetersecurity systems during the design phase prior to deployment.Post-installation changes to camera views or sensor zoning,for any reason,could then result in a major undertaking to reconfigure the integrated system.The new paradigm of ascertaining pinpoint locations of intruders has effectively made the matter of sensor zoning one of software.Such boundaries can now be changed easily without physically moving sensors and associated infrastructure.
