如题.我在做题的时候看到这个 觉得甚是奇怪. birthday应该是特指,为什么有时候要用the 有时候不用呢?求高人指点.

第一句不用是因为前面已经有限定词my mother's ,而第二句表达式已有所改变,也可以写成my grandma's eightieth birthday ,同样地,第一句可以改成the fortieth birthday of my mother's
再问： 那请问这一句：i am checking if he is free tomorrow. 为什么不用主将从现？这一句：i don't know if it will rain tomorrow.又为什么要用？
再答： 这两句中的if 都解释为“是否”引导宾语从句，不需要考虑主将从现，该是将来时还是将来时，i am checking if he is free tomorrow.这一句用一般现在时带有一种主观倾向，希望“他”明天有空。
